Almost every supplier describes its catalogue as research grade, most quote a purity figure, and many mention third-party testing. The claims are easy to make and hard to check, which is precisely why they are worth checking.
The single most useful question to ask any supplier, us included, is whether you can read the certificate before you order, and whether the batch number on that certificate matches the number printed on the vial that arrives. A certificate available on request after the fact is a different proposition from one published against its batch in advance. High-performance liquid chromatography separates a sample into its components and measures each as a proportion of the total. The purity percentage is the area of the target peptide's peak as a share of everything the detector saw. It is a genuinely useful number, and it is also frequently quoted without the document that would let anyone verify it.
Two caveats are worth carrying into any comparison. A purity percentage describes a single-compound product only. A blend has no single figure, because there is no single target molecule for the percentage to beof, and a blend certificate quantifies each active by mass instead. And purity is not the same as net peptide content, which accounts for the salt and water fraction of a lyophilised powder.
